About Centre

Centre for Studies in Legal Theory, Dharmashastra National Law University aims to study and research various thoughts in legal theory. The vision of the Centre is to initiate and later develop a Centre of learning, revisiting and researching the areas of Legal Theory with an aim to aid in making better lawyers, better judges and better academics for a just, equitable and rational society.

Centre Objectives

This centre aims to fill this gap and revive the fading enthusiasm among the students and academia for the study of Legal Theory. It further aims to ensure a perpetual quest for the study of law. It aims to instil an endless questioning and never-ending curiosity to know the nature of law among the students, research scholars and teachers. It endeavours to widen public engagement with legal theory.

Centre Activities

  • A Panel discussion on Demystifying 'consent' in Marital rape in India was organised in collaboration with Centre for Research and Studies in Human Rights, DNLU. The speakers were Ms. Rohini Sen, Ph.D. Scholar, University of Warwick; Ms. Surbhi Karwa, BCL candidate, University of Oxford and Dr. Mithilesh N Bhatt, Assistant Professor, Sardar Patel University of Police, Jodhpur. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Manwendra K Tiwari, Dean, DNLU and was held on 8 March 2022.
  • A talk on 'Feminist Engagement with Indian Constitution Making Process' by Ms. Surbhi Karwa, BCL candidate in University of Oxford, was organised on 16 August 2021 from 1:30 PM IST onwards.
  • A talk on 'B R Ambedkar: The quest for Justice' by Prof. Akash Singh Rathore was organised on 22 March 2021, 5 PM IST onwards . The talk was moderated by Dr. Prashant Ingole, an anti-caste academic.
  • A talk by Prof Anup Surendranath, Executive Director of Project 39 A & Professor at NLU, Delhi on 'How Should we punish? Questions & Lessons from Death Penalty Sentencing' was organised on 27 January 2021.
